Radio New Zealand provides Civil Defence information in emergencies. They did an outstanding job last night of keeping people informed after the 7.5 magnitude earthquake. Their AM transmission could be compromised due to the funding freeze. AM frequencies travel a lot further than FM frequencies which are pretty much line of sight. A lot of places in New Zealand don’t have internet access or FM. They also serve the South Pacific where these issues are more pronounced. Those people rely on AM for their information.
